The Quiet Leader Wins

Lao Tzu on leading without pushing.

“Am I just not cut out to lead, because I'm not loud?” For anyone who has asked that. Lao Tzu wrote that under the best leaders, when the work is done, people say, “It happened naturally.” Through lines like “teaching without words” and “the highest good is like water,” this book translates Lao Tzu into the everyday language of today's managers — leading a team without speeches or micromanagement. I'm 30 and Still Can't Stand on My Own

The Analects for twenty- and thirty-somethings finding their way in the age of AI.

“At thirty, I stood firm,” said Confucius — words that sting most for a generation still finding its feet. Comparing yourself with peers, not knowing what you want, wondering what's left for you as AI takes on more of the work. This book picks sixteen themes from the Analects that speak to people in their twenties and thirties, and rewrites them in plain modern language — no classical Chinese required. Confucius himself spent years wandering from state to state, unrecognized.

Honestly? We're full of them. Work, family, aging parents, a body that isn't what it was — and underneath it all, the quiet fear that it may be too late to start over. For readers at life's midpoint, this book brings sixteen passages from the Analects into modern language: loosening the belief that it's too late, living with regret, and redrawing your relationships with the people closest to you.

Seeing Through People — The Analects

The Analects on reading people in an age of social media and AI.

The smooth talker, the charming colleague, the person who shines on your screen — how far should you trust the good impression? Confucius said: “Clever words and an ingratiating face are seldom signs of true goodness.” This final volume carries the Analects' way of observing people into an age of social media and AI-generated content, across seventeen chapters — from telling “seems nice” apart from “is good” to checking whether you've become the smooth talker yourself.

Let Go First

Working without strain in the age of AI — lessons from Lao Tzu’s “the highest good is like water.”

“I’m working so hard, yet getting nowhere.” Maybe the problem isn’t how much effort you put in, but how tightly you grip. For anyone anxious about falling behind in the age of AI, this short book works through just two chapters of the Tao Te Ching — “the highest good is like water” and “in learning, add daily; in the Way, subtract daily” — to think quietly about working without strain. Each chapter ends with the original text, a Japanese reading and a modern rendering. A 30–40 minute read.

No Applause Needed

Confucius on letting go of the need for approval.

How many times did you check your “likes” today? All day long we measure our worth by other people’s reactions. Confucius asked: “Is it not the mark of a gentleman to feel no resentment when others fail to recognize him?” This is not a book about stamping out the need for approval, but practice in slowly loosening your grip. Leave No Trace

The Caigentan on letting things pass through you.

The person who said it has long forgotten. Yet inside you, the same scene plays again and again. What wears a mind down is not the event but the replay. The Caigentan, a 400-year-old book of practical wisdom, observes that bamboo keeps no sound once the wind has passed, and still water keeps no shadow once the geese have gone. Not suppressing feeling, not ignoring it — receiving what comes and letting it through. Eight chapters, each closing with the original passage, a Japanese reading and a modern rendering.

New series “Zen in One Breath,” Book One · Wumenguan & Linji Lu

The Way Back Is Now

“The ordinary mind is the Way” — finding your way back from scattered attention.

You open social media halfway through an email; halfway through a meeting you are worrying about tomorrow. You keep being carried somewhere that isn’t now. That isn’t weak will — the world is built to take your attention. You can’t stop being carried off, but you can come back, as often as you need to. Working from case 19 of the Wumenguan (“the ordinary mind is the Way”) and Linji’s “be the host wherever you are, and where you stand is real,” this book traces a way back one breath long. Each chapter ends with the original passage, a Japanese reading, a modern rendering and its source.

New series “Living Small,” Book One · Hōjōki & Tsurezuregusa

Learn from the River

A life that doesn’t pile up — lessons from the Hōjōki and Essays in Idleness.

The room you cleared out is filling up again. Eight hundred years ago, Kamo no Chōmei opened the Hōjōki: “The flowing river never stops, and yet the water is never the same.” A river carries a great deal and never grows heavy — because it lets everything pass. What weighs us down isn’t what we own, but what we hold back. Drawing on the opening of the Hōjōki and the preface to Essays in Idleness, this book redesigns a way of living that doesn’t depend on the resolve to throw things away. Each chapter ends with the original text, a reading, a modern rendering and its source.

New series “People with Form,” Book One · The Book of Five Rings & Rikyū’s Poems

You Don’t Need Willpower

Habits that last without willpower — building the structure called “form.”

“This time I’ll keep it up every day.” Three weeks later, that page in your planner is blank again. What’s missing may not be willpower but design. In The Book of Five Rings, Miyamoto Musashi compared the way of strategy to carpentry: a master doesn’t build on sheer resolve — he sharpens his tools, plans the sequence and works steadily within a form. Drawing on Musashi and the poems of Sen no Rikyū, this book translates “form” — decisions made in advance, willpower handed off to structure — into the language of everyday habits. Each chapter ends with the original text, a reading, a modern rendering and its source.

New series “Strategy Without Battle,” Book One · Sun Tzu

Know Yourself Before the Battle

A self-assessment for a career that doesn’t wear you down — lessons from Sun Tzu.

Working hard and still not getting anywhere? What’s missing may not be effort but choosing where to fight. More than two thousand years ago, The Art of War put it plainly: “Know the enemy and know yourself, and in a hundred battles you will never be in peril.” The people who don’t lose aren’t the strongest — they’re the ones who know themselves. Take stock of your strengths on three shelves, handle weaknesses without trying to fix them, and redraw your career not as a timeline but as a single map of the terrain. A quiet self-assessment that doesn’t lean on personality-test labels. Each chapter ends with the original text, a classical reading, a modern rendering and the chapter it comes from.
